I jumped another stone this weekend!

As many of you know, I am on a journey across a wide stream.  This weekend, I jumped another stone across that stream on my way to the other side.  I am on a journey to a terminal degree in Education specializing in Educational Technology.  While there is plenty to be done, I pause this week to celebrate with my friends in RL and in SL.  This is a milestone that I never thought I would pass, and if you knew me in 2004 you would have agreed with the team of doctors from a very good university hospital that I would never be anything but a vegetable if I survived.  The thought of getting this far literally brings tears to my eyes. I have held down more than one job at a time, I have lived alone, I drive a car, and I am earning a PhD in Educational Technology.  So celebrate with me! Connect with me inworld or on Twitter and tell me how you are celebrating!

GlobalEdCon - "Education for All" Keynotes, Submission Extension, and Call for Volunteers

Our 2013 Global Education Conference starts this coming Monday, November 18th, and runs 24-hours a day for five days. It's online, awesome, free, and all about increasing opportunities for connecting classrooms, supporting cultural awareness, and recognizing diversity and educational access for all. The call for proposals is being extended until November 17th, the day before the conference. Can you believe it?! It's just one more way that a virtual conference rocks the traditional conference model. We've also issued our call for volunteers. If you haven't been a volunteer moderator at one of our virtual events before, you may not know what you're missing. Really, it's a blast. Do join us. Finally, we're super-excited about our new "Education for All" conference strand, which is being coordinated by the Global Campaign for Education-US. Worldwide there are 57 million young people of elementary school age who are not in school, and many other young people who are in school, but are receiving a sub-par education and therefore reading and learning far below their grade level. Additionally, there are 70+ million adolescents who are also not in school--either having dropped (or been pulled) out to work, tend to siblings. or to be married at an early age. Teachers in many countries often have little more than a high school education and receive little or no professional development. Organizations and coalitions like the Global Campaign for Education are working to ensure that everyone has an equitable access to a quality education, and are advocating for additional financial resources, enhanced professional development, smaller classroom size, adequate educational materials, and access to technology that links students and teachers to information and collaboration with peers.

Are we ready to go all in and totally change the paradigm?

Courtney talks about broadening the box of educational innovation instead of doing things the same way we have always done them since the industrial revolution. But what if we looked where there was no box?
Are you ready to go all in?

The Homeschool Conference 2013

A Free Online Worldwide Homeschooling Conference
August 23 to 24, 2013, the inaugural worldwide Homeschool Conference will occur, an online and free event. It will provide an opportunity for those involved with homeschooling, unschooling, free schools, democratic schools, and other forms of alternative and independent education to share strategies, practices, and resources. From how to start homeschooling to alternative ways of learning algebra, this conference is also valuable for traditional educators looking to expand their scope and understanding of teaching and learning practices.
The conference features a keynote by author Dr. Peter Gray (Free To Learn) and hundreds of presentations by current practitioners doing home-based learning, as well as from teachers and students in nontraditional learning environments.
Co-chaired by Steve Hargadon ( and Patrick Farenga (, The Homeschool Conference leverages online resources to promote selfdirected learning and to demonstrate a range of options available to anyone who is dissatisfied with conventional schooling and seeks other ways to help children be happy, successful learners.
Steve Hargadon founded and runs the online social network for educators called Classroom 2.0, runs open and online conferences for educators, and hosts an interview series called the Future of Education. Patrick Farenga published Growing Without Schooling magazine for sixteen years, continuing the work of the late teacher/author John Holt. Farenga speaks and writes about alternatives to school and co-authored Teach Your Own: The John Holt Book of Homeschooling. His most recent book is The Legacy of John Holt: A Man Who Genuinely Understood, Trusted, and Respected Children.

For more information about the event, please contact Pat or Steve:

VWBPE Closing Keynote: MOOCs as a sense of place: Community as curriculum by Dave Cormier

MOOCs in all their forms are about leveraging the scale and abundance of the internet for learning. One of the ways I like to think of the MOOC is as a call for help. I am here, sitting in a pile of abundance, looking for people to work with. A network to help me find. A community to help me learn.  A way of using the internet to make better sense of the world. A place in which to grow.

Someone recently asked me, "Why do you relay?" I am on a relay team in the virtual world of Second Life.  I think this video, which a fellow RFLinSL colleague shared with me says it quite succintly.

Motivation is engaging

How do we motivate students who are asked to the same thing over and over again in schools? Do we provide unique experiences in each classroom or do we demand the identical behavior in every room?
