Keep Your Eye on the Flag

The lyrics to the song used during the Disney Fireworks tonight read:

You’re a grand old flag

You’re a high-flying flag

And forever in peace may you wave

You’re the emblem of

The land I love

The home of the free and the brave

Every heart beats true

‘Neath the red white and blue

Where there’s never a boast or brag

Should old acquaintance be forgot

Keep your eye on the grand old flag

The grand old flag

Let’s take this opportunity to refocus ourselves as citizens. Keep our eyes on our flag and what it represents. In fourth grade, I was taught that each stripe stands for one of the original colonies and the
Stars stand for the 50 states in the Union. Notice the stripes are all the same size. Notice the stars are all the same size. The red in our flag is for hardiness and valor, while the white is for purity and innocence. The blue stands for vigilance, perseverance, and justice. (Thank you, Ms. Stine, my 4th grade teacher).

Let us refocus on the flag and what it represents to the exclusion of all else. And let that be our guide, our moral compass, that leads us to higher ground.
